Preserve Evidence Before It Changes

Do not alter the original material unless necessary to secure your accounts. Avoid deleting chat histories, closing scam-related browser tabs, editing screenshots, or confronting the scammer in a way that signals an investigation is underway. A scam operator may remove a website, deactivate a profile, empty a receiving wallet, or switch communications to a new account once challenged.

Start by creating a secure case folder and preserving original files in their native format where possible. In many investment and pig-butchering scams, the displayed balance is fabricated and is not evidence that assets were actually held or traded.

Build a Clear Incident Timeline

A forensic investigation is not merely a collection of files. It is a chronological account that can be tested against blockchain data, exchange records, and communications. Build a timeline from the first contact through the last known transaction.

For each event, document what happened, who communicated with you, which platform was used, what was said, and what action you took. Include dates, approximate times, and time zones. If you were instructed to purchase cryptocurrency on a legitimate exchange and then send it to an external wallet, separate those steps. The purchase, withdrawal, and blockchain transfer are distinct events with different records.

A useful timeline might show that a victim encountered a social media advertisement, was directed to a trading website, spoke with a purported account manager, purchased USDT through an exchange, and sent the assets to a specified address. It should then record subsequent requests for tax payments, liquidity deposits, verification charges, or withdrawal release fees. These later demands often demonstrate the operational pattern of the scam.

Be precise about uncertainty. If you do not know whether a wallet belonged to the scammer, write that it was the address provided through a particular message on a particular date. Avoid assumptions such as “the funds went to Binance” because a transaction later interacted with an address associated with an exchange. Attribution requires analysis, and wallet activity can pass through intermediaries, decentralized services, bridges, or multiple exchanges.

What Makes Crypto Evidence Actionable

Evidence becomes more useful when it can be authenticated, reproduced, and connected to a recovery pathway. For blockchain activity, the essential starting point is the transaction hash. This is the unique identifier that allows an investigator to verify the transfer on the relevant network. A copied wallet address without the associated transaction may be incomplete, especially where multiple transfers occurred.

Record the exact blockchain and asset. USDT on Ethereum, Tron, Solana, and other networks are not interchangeable from an evidentiary perspective. The same applies to Bitcoin, Ether, stablecoins, and tokens transferred through bridges. A report should identify the relevant network, transaction sequence, source and destination addresses, asset values at the time of transfer, and subsequent movement where traceable.

Off-chain evidence is equally significant. The strongest cases generally show the relationship between the fraud narrative and the transaction data. An email directing a transfer to a wallet address, a chat message pressuring payment, an exchange withdrawal confirmation, and an on-chain transfer can form a coherent evidentiary chain. Each item supports the others.

For legal counsel, banks, exchanges, and compliance teams, presentation matters. Files should be named consistently, preserved with their original metadata where available, and organized so another party can understand their source and relevance. A formal forensic report may then document methodology, transaction flows, attribution indicators, known service exposure, and evidentiary limitations. Protect the Chain of Custody

Law enforcement, financial intelligence authorities, and legal counsel may require different formats and supporting documentation.

Speed can matter when traced assets reach an identifiable exchange or other regulated service, but a rushed, unsupported request can be less effective than a focused evidence submission. The objective is to provide enough verified detail for the receiving party to identify relevant transactions, assess risk, and determine whether it can preserve records or take action within its legal authority.
